PM Modi Inaugurates ₹9,000 Cr Projects in Mizoram; Flags Off First Rail Line Connecting Aizawl to Indian Railways

PM Modi Inaugurates

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple projects worth over ₹9,000 crore in Mizoram, spanning railways, roadways, energy, and sports.

A highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang New Rail Line, a project worth over ₹8,000 crore, which connects Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, to the Indian Railways network for the first time. The 51-km line involved the construction of 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges, making it one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in the region.

Calling it a “historic day for Mizoram and the nation,” PM Modi said the new railway link will transform connectivity, reduce travel costs, and open new markets for farmers and businesses in the state. For the first time, Mizoram will now be directly connected to Delhi by Rajdhani Express, along with new services to Guwahati and Kolkata.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the strategic importance of the Northeast in India’s growth story, highlighting Mizoram’s role in the Act East Policy and the emerging North East Economic Corridor. He added that infrastructure expansion in the region has accelerated in the last decade, from rural roads and internet connectivity to clean water and LPG access.

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that the new line will not only improve passenger movement but also start cargo operations, reducing the cost of essentials like cement and steel. The enhanced connectivity is also expected to boost tourism and create new employment opportunities.

In addition, PM Modi flagged off three new express trains – Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, Sairang-Guwahati Express, and Sairang-Kolkata Express – and laid the foundation stone for the Chhimtuipui River Bridge, which will reduce travel time in southern Mizoram by two hours.

With this development, Aizawl has become the fourth Northeast capital, after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar, to be linked with the Indian Railways network. The move is seen as a significant step toward strengthening trade, tourism, and economic growth in the region.
